What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy is a way to express and explore your feelings, thoughts, and experiences through creativity. You don’t need to have any artistic skill or experience — the focus isn’t on creating a “good” or “beautiful” piece of art, but on using the process to understand yourself and work through what you’re going through. With the guidance of a trained art therapist, you might draw, paint, sculpt, or use other creative activities to help you put your feelings into a form that feels safer and easier than words.
Art therapy can be especially helpful for people dealing with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other challenges. Sometimes, it’s hard — or even impossible — to talk about painful memories or emotions, but art provides another way to express and process those experiences. Creating art can also help you feel more in control, reduce stress, and find moments of calm and clarity. Over time, it can help you make sense of what you’ve been through, discover new strengths, and take meaningful steps toward healing.
